Mini Lesson

Robots are already doing amazing things today — and inventors and engineers are dreaming up even more ways robots could help us in the future!

What is a robot?

  • A robot is a machine that can be programmed to do a job automatically.
  • Robots can move, lift, sense, and respond to the world around them.
  • Example: A robot arm in a factory puts cars together — all day, without getting tired.

Where might robots help in the future?

  • At home: A robot could cook dinner, carry groceries, or help an elderly person get up safely.
  • In schools: A robot helper might carry books or read to a student who is sick at home.
  • Outdoors: Robots might plant trees, clean up litter, or put out forest fires.
  • In space: Robots might explore planets too far and too dangerous for humans to visit.

People still design and control robots

  • Every robot starts with a human idea and human instructions.
  • Engineers decide what the robot should do and how it should be safe.
Four places robots might help in the futureFour quadrant cards showing future robot helpers: top-left shows a house labeled At home, top-right shows a tree labeled Outdoors, bottom-left shows a school building labeled At school, bottom-right shows a planet labeled In space. Each card has a simple robot icon.At homeOutdoorsAt schoolIn space

A human inventor designs a robotA person stands at a drawing board sketching a robot. An arrow labeled Human idea points from the drawing to a finished robot on the right. Below is the phrase People build and teach robots.Human ideaPeople build and teach robots.
A human inventor sketches a robot design, which becomes a real robot — every robot starts with a human idea.

Ask yourself: "What job would I want a robot to do? Who would design and teach that robot?
