Mini Lesson

Devices like tablets, laptops, and computers need to be treated with care — even when you are simply switching them on or off! Doing it the right way keeps the device safe and makes sure your work is never lost.

Step 1 — Ask an adult first

  • Always ask a parent, guardian, or trusted grown-up before picking up or starting a device.
  • Adults make sure the device is charged, in good condition, and that it is the right time to use it.

Step 2 — Handle with clean, dry hands

  • Wash and dry your hands before touching a device.
  • Water and dirt can damage screens and openings such as charging ports.

Step 3 — Turn on or use the device

  • Press the power button gently — do not press hard or hold it too long.
  • Place the device on a flat, stable surface so it will not fall.

Step 4 — Shut down properly before putting away

  • Always use the correct shut-down or power-off menu — never just yank out the cable or flip the power strip.
  • A proper shutdown saves your work and protects the device's memory.
  • Place the device back in its case or charging station so it is ready for next time.
