Mini Lesson

Whether you are walking to the park, riding a bike, or crossing the street, knowing how to stay safe helps protect you and everyone around you!

What is community safety?

  • Community safety means following behaviors and rules that protect people from getting hurt in shared spaces.
  • Example: Looking both ways before crossing the street is a safe behavior — it protects you and drivers from a dangerous accident.
  • Safety rules apply on roads, in parks, in stores, and everywhere people share space.

Safe behaviors in the community

  • Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Walk on the sidewalk and use crosswalks.
  • Wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter.
  • Stay with a trusted adult in public places.
  • Never talk to or go anywhere with a stranger alone.

Unsafe behaviors

  • Running into the road without looking.
  • Riding a bike without a helmet.
  • Wandering away from a trusted adult in a public place.

Who helps keep us safe?

  • Police officers — enforce laws and respond to emergencies.
  • Crossing guards — help children cross roads safely near schools.
  • Traffic lights and signs — give everyone clear signals about when it is safe to move.
