Mini Lesson

When you grow up, you might become a farmer, a builder, an artist, or something else entirely — the world is full of interesting jobs!

What is a job?

  • A job is work that a person does, usually to earn money and to contribute something useful to the community.
  • Example: A farmer is a person whose job is to grow food — they use a tractor and work on a farm.
  • Every job uses special tools or takes place in a special location.

Jobs, tools, and places

  • Farmer — grows crops and raises animals; works on a farm with a tractor.
  • Builder — constructs buildings and homes; works on a construction site with a hammer.
  • Chef — cooks and prepares food; works in a kitchen with pots and pans.
  • Artist — creates paintings and drawings; works in a studio with paintbrushes.
  • Pilot — flies airplanes; works at an airport in the cockpit.
  • Scientist — studies the natural world; works in a laboratory with test tubes and microscopes.

Why do we need different jobs?

  • No one person can do everything — communities need people with many different skills.
  • Each job meets a different need — farmers feed us, builders shelter us, doctors heal us.
