Mini Lesson
Your community is full of helpers — people whose jobs are to take care of everyone in the neighborhood, town, or city!
What is a community helper?
- A community helper is a person whose job helps the people around them stay safe, healthy, or well served.
- Example: A firefighter is a community helper who rushes to put out fires and rescue people in danger.
- Community helpers work outside the school — in the neighborhood and the wider community.
Community helpers and what they do
- Police officer — keeps the community safe and helps in emergencies.
- Firefighter — puts out fires and rescues people and animals.
- Doctor — examines patients and helps them get better when they are ill.
- Mail carrier — delivers letters and packages to homes and businesses.
- Garbage collector — collects trash to keep the community clean.
- Bus driver — drives a bus to safely transport passengers to their destinations.
School helpers vs. community helpers
- School helpers work inside the school — like the teacher, principal, and custodian.

💡
Ask yourself: "Which community helper do I see most often near my home? What would happen in our community if that helper was not there?
