Mini Lesson

Before you throw something away, ask yourself: could this become something new? Scientists and engineers call this upcycling — taking a used material and creating something useful or beautiful from it.

What is upcycling?

  • Upcycling means taking a material that would be thrown away and making it into something better or more useful.
  • It is different from recycling — recycling breaks material down; upcycling transforms it directly.
  • Example: A cardboard tube becomes a telescope. An egg carton becomes a paint palette. A plastic bottle becomes a bird feeder.

Good materials to reuse

  • Cardboard tubes, boxes, and egg cartons
  • Plastic bottles, lids, and containers
  • Fabric scraps, old socks, and buttons
  • Newspaper, magazines, and wrapping paper
  • Tin cans (with adult help for sharp edges)

The design process — four steps

  1. Step 1 — Plan: Decide what you want to make and which materials you will use.
  2. Step 2 — Gather: Collect the recycled materials you need.
  3. Step 3 — Build: Cut, glue, fold, and assemble your creation.
  4. Step 4 — Test and improve: Does it work? What could you change to make it better?
