Mini Lesson
Scientists use all kinds of materials every day — from crayons and clay to hot liquids and sharp tools. Knowing which materials are safe to handle on your own and which ones need an adult nearby is one of the most important science skills of all.
What makes a material hazardous?
- Sharp edges — metal scissors, knives, and blades can cut skin. Blunt scissors are safer but still need care.
- Heat — boiling water, hot pots, ovens, and irons can cause burns. Even a hot glue gun is dangerous for young children.
- Chemicals — cleaning products, bleach, and some adhesives contain chemicals that can harm skin, eyes, or lungs if touched or breathed in.
- Electricity — sockets, batteries with exposed wires, and electrical appliances can give dangerous shocks.
- Example: A pencil is safe. A craft knife is not — it needs an adult.
Safe to use on your own
- Crayons, colored pencils, and markers (washable)
- Child scissors (blunt ended)
- Glue sticks and PVA craft glue
- Clay, playdough, and modeling materials
- Paper, card, and fabric scraps
- Wooden blocks and plastic building pieces
Always ask an adult
- Sharp scissors, craft knives, and metal blades
- Hot glue guns, irons, and stoves
- Bleach, cleaning sprays, and solvents
- Power tools and electrical equipment
- Glass containers and sharp ceramic pieces
💡
Ask yourself: "Could this cut me, burn me, or harm me if I touch it? If yes — ask an adult first!"
