Weather and Seasons

Have you noticed that some days are hot and sunny, while others are cold and snowy? The weather changes throughout the year in a pattern we call the four seasons.

Spring — warm and rainy

• Spring comes after winter. The air gets warmer and rain falls often.
• Flowers bloom, trees grow new leaves, and baby animals are born.
• Example: You see tulips blooming and puddles after spring showers.

Summer — hot and sunny

• Summer is the hottest season. Days are long and there is plenty of sunshine.
• Children swim, plants grow tall, and sometimes there are thunderstorms.

Fall / Autumn — cool and windy

• In fall the air cools down and leaves on trees change color and fall off.
• Days get shorter and the wind picks up. We start wearing warmer clothes.

Winter — cold and snowy

• Winter is the coldest season. In many places it snows and ponds may freeze.
• Days are short and dark. We wear coats, hats, and gloves to stay warm.
• Some animals hibernate and many trees have no leaves.
