Mini Lesson

You did it! Forty lessons. Five units. Hundreds of words, stories, facts, characters, maps, questions, and performances. Today is not the end — it is the beginning of a lifelong reading journey. Let us take a moment to appreciate everything you can now do.

You are a reader because you can…

  • Decode new words using blending, digraphs, blends, and silent-e.
  • Understand stories — who, what, where, the problem, the feelings, and the lesson.
  • Read for information — signs, articles, maps, charts, and nonfiction books.
  • Read with and for others — with a partner, aloud with expression, and as a performer.
  • Respond to reading — through logs, illustrations, book covers, and recommendations.

Three habits every great reader keeps forever

  • Read every day — even just one page. The habit matters more than the amount.
  • Think about what you read — ask yourself: who? what? why? what did I feel? what do I wonder?
  • Share what you read — tell someone about a book you loved. Pass the reading on.

What comes next?

  • You are ready for Grade 2 Reading — longer stories, more complex nonfiction, and deeper discussions.
  • Keep your reading log going — add every book you read this summer.
  • Start a new Read Around the World passport.
  • Find one book you want to read next — and begin it today.
